beauties of a college campus |

In 2010, a $30 million enhancement plan began to transform central campus at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The two-year design process began and ended before I visited the university for the first time, and yet, the plan has continued to expand, for I not only enjoyed the beauties from that renovation, but I also enjoyed the continuous construction of new buildings and programs during my undergraduate studies. UTD is not perfect (no university is), but it is all about progress and I've learned to find my place in it.
Are you a UTD student or faculty member and want to use one of these photos to advertise for an event or program? I'm happy to share higher resolution digital copies for free. Please contact me and add a description of which photo and the reason behind your request using your UTD email.
Are you a prospective student (or relative of one)? I hope you'll enjoy this digital campus tour! If you want a recent alumni's perspective or the location of any of these photos, please feel free to ask. I can answer many questions about on-campus housing and ways to get involved as a previous peer advisor and multicultural center graphic designer. As a brief introduction to the school, I've integrated my top ten compliments of this university.

ON campus Housing
I've learned about some of the best and worst case on-campus housing situations as a one year resident and a two-year residential assistant (called Peer Advisors at UTD). Most issues can be resolved, but some I still am baffled by some and hope that, with time, they too can be resolved.
The most common issue is missing deadlines, and part of the issue (in my opinion) includes misinterpretation of the advertisement banners put up by housing every year around October. The advertised November to February time frame to sign up and renew includes several deadlines that are pretty non-negotiable. Here's a very high level description of how to get housing through UTD. Northside is not governed by UTD and has its own process. Deadlines end at 5 pm and housing's website, instagram, paper flyers distributed around October to each apartment, and constant email reminders to students are the go to for specific dates that vary from year to year.

regular applicaiton For those not currently living on campus. Priority numbers depend on scholarship and/or your year designation. Freshman: You will be placed in the dorms (unless they run out of space or you have a medical reason for special accommodation). Priority is given to students who apply before sometime in April. Other: the deeper into school you get, the harder it will be to retain housing. This route gets filled quickly. Usually around March IF spots are still available, but there are usually openings for mid-academic year leases. |
Sign UpFor those already living on campus to choose a spot in UV (University Village) or CCH (Canyon Creek Heights). Allows you to get priority into housing before others off campus can apply. This is a three step process and if you miss the first one, you have to go through the regular application process. 1) Intent to Sign Up: January 2) Roommate Groups: February 3) Room Selection: late February |
RENEWALOnly for those already living on campus except for the dorms. This is the ONLY way to guarantee housing for the next school year, but it also means that you will be stuck paying for summer housing and no one is going to come in to clean your apartment. You will be placed in the same room you have already been living in (unless housing notifies you otherwise). usually late November for the next academic year |
When I first visited UTD, I noticed that the testing center was divided into sections named after Star Wars characters (click on icon for source). Students are Comets and the mascot is Temoc, a creepy yet lovable comet with a blue body. You can spy him on this page. Temoc is a semordnilap and many Comets have fun calling other things with their names backwards. The most popular example is enarc, a crane used to build the new science building.
