PhD Pathways
March 2024
Venture Capital panelists to what does the future of AI look like? Hear it all while meeting new research collaborators at Stanford's career education's annual day-long event for PhD students (like myself - really scored on photographing this one). Hired by Ethography for Stanford Affairs. (I no longer own the copyright for these)

Stanford Viennese Ball
2023
It's been a nice surprise to learn that there is a large culture around social dance among the graduate (and sort of undergraduate) student population at Stanford University. Every year, different social dance clubs join forces to host a ball which opens similar to Viennese Balls with processionals and various performances. For weeks before the ball, these clubs offered free lessons in waltz, swing, West Coast swing, salsa, fusion, bachata and more.

AMSTERDAM: Random Drag Fest
August 2022
I was solo traveling for the first time and was at a laundromat before checking in to a hostel when I noticed that an event was picking up right outside. I had already fallen in love with the canals and bikes everywhere and the festivities of this drag fest brought an additional energy.

Nikkei: Peruvian and Japanese Dining Experience
June 2022
When you become friends with design impact graduate students who have a passion for creating meaningful experiences, you end up with a happily filled belly and lots of lingering thoughts on the role of food and storytelling in the creation of culture and blended cultures. This 9-course meal took 4 hours to slowly serve and was some of the best food I've ever tasted including ramen with alpaca.

TEAL IN APRIL: Sexual Awareness Month
2019
One in six American women has been a victim of attempted or completed in her lifetime and approximately every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Equivalent statistics for some other countries are even more terrifying. Global estimates state that about one third of women experience sexual and or physical abuse in their lifetime.
Have you heard of Yarn Bombing? I didn't until we (by which I mean mainly the club members of Stitch to Enrich and other officers since my attempt at crocheting a square ended up a triangle...) made small pieces to "bomb" some trees on campus to promote awareness about sexual assault.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRUTH BEHIND RACE & THE MULTIRACIAL EXPERIENCE: 2018
With the increase of globalization and thus interracial marriages, the multiracial population is ever-increasing. We came together to listen and talk about how being multiracial impacts our lives, our families, and our interactions with others. The following excerpt is from National Geographic's article, "The Changing Face of America" (emphasis added)
2000 was the first year the U.S. Census Bureau allowed respondents to check off more than one race.
“The multiple-race option has been lauded as progress by individuals frustrated by the limitations of racial categories established in the late 18th century by German scientist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, who divided humans into 5 “natural varieties” of red, yellow, brown, black, and white. Although the multiple-race option is still rooted in that taxonomy, it introduces a factor of SELF-DETERMINATION. It’s a step towards fixing a categorization system that, paradoxically, is both ERRONEOUS (since geneticists have demonstrated that race is biologically NOT A REALITY) and ESSENTIAL (since living with race and racism is). The tracking of race is used both to enforce antidiscrimination laws and to identify health issues specific to certain populations.”

FOR THE LOVE OF THE ENVIRONMENT: 2018
Regardless of our backgrounds, we share the same sun and we breathe the same air (though not at the same quality unfortunately). I believe that part of celebrating our diversity needs to include helping maintain the environment we all share. UTD's Sustainability Club is part of the Adopt-A-Shoreline program and cleans part of White Rock Lake every month.

2018 THE BIG DINNER
The closing event of a month long celebration of African American History. Since 1976, every U.S. president has designated February as Black History Month. African Americans have held a central role in positively shaped this country, yet social injustice towards this community are still a sad reality. To focus on the action taken to bring justice within the black community, this year's (2018) Black History Month theme at UT-Dallas is "Blacktivism", a portmanteau of the words "Black" and "activism".

2017 NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION
From the healing dress and a story about the tortoise and the snail, to dance performances with the essential beating of the drum, other students and I learned to appreciate the Native American culture more than we have before.

FRESHMAN MENTOR PROGRAM EVENTS
By far one of the largest undergraduate programs at UT-Dallas, the Freshman Mentor Program puts on events where mentees and mentors can come together to have fun, eat food, and get to know each other better. Part of mentoring is seeing through each other's differing views of life, and I've learned so much from other mentors and my mentee about different ways to see this world.

2017 HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: BACHATA DANCE WORKSHOP
I couldn't dance since my partner (the camera) was banned from dancing, but I sure was tempted to. Bachata is a dance form that originated in the Dominican Republic and focuses on relaxed, free movements synchronized to Bachata music (typically in 4/4 time). It can be a very intimate dance form, but this workshop focused on the basics and was very much G rated (PG for hand-holding).
